Synopsis; Konata Sorami has joined the army hoping to become a bugler. Whie she has perfect pitch, and can identify notes by hearing them, she's not very good. She can't even play "Reveille" right. Her first assignment is to join the platoon at Seize, and after a meandering, day-long adventure that includes a festival based on a dark, possibly-true legend and a lost heirloom, Sorami finds her new platoon and her tutor, Rio Kazumiya.

Hello all. So last week I had the pleasure of attending my second-ever Comiket. This isn't the first time that Comiket has been discussed on Anime3000. In fact, one of my earliest articles (and still proud of it) was about the previous Comiket 76. The thing about conventions like Comiket is that nothing really changes from one to the next.

Chu-Bra!! Preview
Synopsis: Naya Hayama has just entered junior high, and embarrasses herself at the opening ceremony by tripping on her way upstage to give a speech, revealing that she is wearing a pair of adult panties. Her classmates are scandalized - could she be seducing older men for money? Haruka and Yako think so, and decide to investigate. They think they've turned up convincing evidence when they spy on her meeting with an older gentlemen, who hands her a brown paper bag of frilly panties and bras. It all turns out to be a misunderstanding, of course, because Naya is actually a panties enthusiast who tests panties for companies to make sure new designs are comfortable. She is also an expert in the wearing of ladies underwear, and is happy to teach Haruka and Yako the finer points of wearing undergarments.

Synopsis: Akiharu Hino is your typical high school student. Despite looking like a young hooligan, he enrolls in training at a high-class academy for training future butlers and maids. Spotted by a firey blonde-haired gal named Cerina, he finds his life turned upside down and boobs grabs and you probably know how this song-and-dance goes.

I first started listening to J-pop because I happened to be at the mall in Pinellas Park that had a Shonen Knife CD back in 1994. In the early 90s the whole grunge thing was going on and I honestly didn’t care for it due to the whiney lyrics and repetitive riffs that got old quick. I was looking for something different, so I picked up Shonen Knife’s Rock Animals (1994), which was a pop-laced punk album. I liked Rock Animals back then mainly because it offered something that grunge wasn’t.
My second exposure was as a college student during the 90s. Hiro, my Japanese roommate from college, had a girlfriend who was coming to visit him from Kyoto and he asked me if I wanted any gifts. That made me recall an old catalogue from Video Search of Miami that had an ad for the J-pop singer Chara. Wanting to look cool and in-the-know, I said I wanted a Chara CD. I got lucky with that one since she had a hit single, Yasashii Kimochi, high on the charts. I stumbled into that one.

Japan Jumble: Journey Through the Decade
ON THE ROAD...dare mo wa tabi no tochuu. Okay, bad Kamen Rider jokes aside, the Japan Jumble is back and it wants blood...and mochi.
So I've been sick and busy with the holidays, thus haven't been focusing my love and attention on this column the way I normally do. However, now instead of putting things on Flickr, I am free to upload to my own FTP space with impunity.
In any case, for the first column of the New Year, what better thing to cover than New Year's Day? In Japan, New Year's is like bigger than Jesus. Really. While Christmas is slowly gaining traction beyond just a couples' holiday and excuse to eat KFC, the real focal point is in staying up late and watching the ball drop. Add a comment

His magnum opus on the subject, Manga: The Complete Guide, put him through a hellacious schedule of reading and writing about close to 5,000 individual manga. It only makes sense that the next step in this borderline-insane obsession is to pen his own original series titled King of RPGs.
This series takes a comical look at the lives of a Massively Multiplayer Online Role-Playing Game (MMORPG) fanatic and his friends. The main character’s obsession in combination with a Dissociative Identity Disorder creates a series of amusing misunderstanding in the multi-faceted world of role-playing. Add a comment
Spaceship Battleship Yamato Warps Into Third Dimension
In yet another reminder that I have to use my pre-bought tickets for the Space Battleship Yamato Rebirth anime, a trailer of the live-action debut of the franchise has come out.
Fan anticipation has been cautiously optimistic. Japan does have a robust entertainment industry and a reputation in Asia for flashy, expensive movies, but not so much for serious sci-fi in the vein of Star Trek. Let's not forget the mixed reactions to previous live-action adaptations like 2004's Casshern and Cutie Honey.

Further complicating matters is the decision to cast boyband heartthrob Takuya Kimura in the starring role. While having a big name like Kimura is a guarantee that the movie will make money, can his hairspray-drenched hands take on the manly stoicism that defines the series?

The State of A3K: A Look at 2009

We started our podcast in August of 2008 and finally found the chemistry that our show so desperately needed in the New Year. I was proud of our consistency, almost too proud. Without an outsider’s perspective, we wore our ignorance like a badge of honor. This would continue until March 16th. This was the turning point of the Anime 3000 Podcast, as well as the beginning of the end of the show as we knew it.
I credit Anime World Order and This Week in Tech for getting me into podcasting. More importantly, I appreciated the overwhelming amount of knowledge they had on their shows. I will never claim to be a repository for anime facts and I am okay with that fact. It is why I have writers like Fernando Ramos, John-Paul Natysin and Bradley Meek on my staff.
