SYNOPSIS
It’s been a while since we last saw anything from .hack. Jahmere last saw .hack//sign years ago on Toonami, and Mike has a collection of .hack media that he watched on and off throughout the years. But in terms of new properties, this is the first new title that has come out of .hack in 5 years and is also the first .hack title to not be handled by studio bee train. Fortunately though, it’s excellent.

The OVA’s story is as good as the anime itself is beautiful. Kinema Citrus did an excellent job with the animation. Whether it be in the fluidity of the fight scenes, or the details in the emotion shown on the characters faces, the artwork found in Quantum is one of sheer excellence and beauty and is worth the price of the show alone.

That’s not to say the story is outdone however, people who’ve seen past iterations of the .hack franchise are pretty familiar with the “person in real life has something happening to them while playing in the game that causes them to have a coma in real life” scenario, but Quantum takes the formula and makes it more emotional by adding a new character in the mix and giving him his own story that incorporates the three main characters. The result is a lightly comedic action adventure with some plot twists and a whole lot of nostalgia. The only gripe we had was that it ended on a cliffhanger.

If you’re a fan of .hack then buy this, if you want to introduce a friend to the franchise this is the perfect way to get them into it. Not only is it totally accessible to newcomers, but it has a ton of easter eggs sprinkled within the OVA that longtime fans will be able to enjoy. Hopefully they make a series for this with the same studio, because if this is how .hack is going to be portrayed from now on, then fans have a lot to look forward to.
