SYNOPSIS

King of RPGs’s co-author and former Viz Media editor, Jason Thompson, joins the Manga Corner to talk about Japanese culture (maids, butlers, new otaku versus old otaku, hikkikomori, and ganguro girls) found in manga.

There are so many references in manga that non-Japanese people won’t get unless they’ve visited Japan. Jd (based in Okinawa, Japan) and Jason (based in California) break down some of those manga references.

Topics discussed includes maid and butler cafes in Japan, the rise of hikkikomori people, shyness in manga, Japanese dialects, older otaku versus younger otaku, prostitution media craze, and the anti-American sentiment in Okinawa.

Jason also shares a little insight into his time as a Viz Media editor.
