Tech Nine – Get The Fuck Out

The Psyguy Story:

He’s one of the most influential people in fandom. Much of the thingswe make fun of nerds on the internet for–Sonic fans especially–can be traced back to this one guy. He’s Bryon “Psyguy” Beaubien, and as is befitting someone who started so much shit, he himself was revealed to be a thoroughly shitty person. Such revelations would prove to mark the end of an era, with the makings of a story VH1 would be giddy to air if it had anything to do with music your parents listened to. Come with The Other Side, as they share the tawdry tale of the man who ruined Sonic the Hedgehog’s presence on the internet, and how his D-list internet fame ended not with a bang, or a whimper, but with his tail placed firmly between his legs as being faced with the consequences of his actions left him running away like a coward, dual trails of flaming tire tracks and a stream of urine behind him.

The ever-controversial shock jock of Anime3000, and host of The Other Side (alongside Andrew Erickson and Max-Vader), and frequent guest on the A3K Podcast. Blunt, unfiltered, and politically incorrect, Cody's podcast appearances are not for the thin skinned. And be sure to check out his 90's cartoon throwback comic, Cloudscratcher!

Just fyi, fan characters (the “original Characters” that you mentioned on this episode) existed way before Fireball20xl even exist. Other than that, it’s pretty much spot on.

    • And “Angry reviewers” existed before TGWTG. But like TGWTG, it was the Fireball20xl clique that made that shit spread like a plague thanks to a wave of wannabes and hangers-on. Psyguy and friends made everyone want to represent themselves as a fancharacter and be in a sprite comic.

I can no longer read or watch psyguy’s shit. I just can’t.

    • Peewee pancakes

Funny you should mention this because I have a bit of a theory about that knucklehead’s OC. Just as you mention OC’s did predate Psyguy’s by a few years, this one in particular by at least the mid 90’s and may just be one true “original character”, a genesis of the whole thing if you would. Unlike Psyguy’s, this one was created by accident, an old sonic 2 glitch dubbed “Ashura”. Once the fans got their mitts on it that’s when shit really went south. It would not surprise me in the very least if Psyguy based his character off that same thing since the basic premise for the two were that they were demons hedgehogs. Not to mention that back when Geocities was a thing if you did a word search for one the other wasn’t far off, among other things. That’s just my 2 cents.

      • I remember the “Ashura” bullshit, but I don’t think that spurred on fancharacters. Probably just gave Psyguy the idea to make his ridiculous OC green. Ashura was just the “Derpy Hooves” of the oldschool Sonic fandom.

        • I’m glad I never even got into it at all given the circumstances. The internet was a completely different beast in those days when I started using it around ’96.

  • Normality

You pretty much hit the whole reason why I could never get into Tabletop RPGs. There’s so many possibilities, yet many of them come off with very little (or no) payoff in the grand scheme of things.

Also, I’m glad I quit making sprite comics.

Also giving their information on the internet, that’s PRETTY fucking stupid. Even on my standards.

  • Listening to this makes me all the more glad I never got into any of it at all, yet when I first got online almost 20 years ago, none of this ever happened at all. The internet certainly was nerdier in it’s infancy, but this was before the regular, normal people started to invade it (or as I call them “The Beautiful People”). Just getting a personal webpage set-up with your own set of links, webrings, scanned gif’s and a set of .wav files of your favorite show’s sound bites was what every one did then. I thought when it started to go downhill was when the “Ate My Balls” pages happened. I even wanted to do one as well but just never figured out HTML long enough to make it happen, but I’m glad I didn’t, those things got old TOO fast.

I also never got into Sonic, I played the first game since my younger brother had a Genesis and that was that. Of course I was already in my teens when those games came out and had other things to worry about than following up on games. I suppose I would sound naive if I said I never heard of this “Fireball20xl” site at all until this podcast. I should consider myself lucky. I don’t have to ruin my life on that OC shit!
