SYNOPSIS
Mike and I are constantly amazed at how even after all this time, anime continues to amaze us. Everything from the title to the premise says that this show should be bad, and that’s what we thought before we popped it into our DVD players. However, there are times when a seemingly terrible anime turns out to be good. This is one of those times an anime turns out to be great.
In it’s core “Yamada’s First Time” is just a great romantic comedy. Theres no hidden strings attached, no mountains of fanservice. if anything the lack of fanservice in this show actually let’s more people pay attention to the well thought out story. The main cast of characters in this show (both main and supporting) are fleshed out and three dimensional. Sure Yamada just wants to jump Kosudas bones early in the story, but as it goes on you can see an obvious change in her characters demeanor and the way she views the relationship. The supporting characters also do a great job of providing hilarious comic relief throughout the show, and aren’t overbearing. Especially Yamada’s best friend Takeshita, who acts like a girlfriend would in real life.
If you like romantic comedies than buy this, if you like great dubs than buy this, even if you just want to watch something funny then BUY THIS. It is without a doubt the best dub FUNimation has ever done, and if Jaime Marchi, Leah Clark, and the rest of the writing staff don’t get an award for this adaptation than it’s a huge snub. The whole cast should be commended especially Brittney Karbowski, and Scott Freeman who both do excellent jobs as Yamada and Kosuda respectively.
