Hello and welcome to the Anime 3000 Panel, I’m your host and moderator Sean Russell. In today’s episode we’re going to bring you Impressions from Anime Expo, some highly anticipated manga, games and anime, news, voicemails from a few of a listeners and of course information about our next season.
Today we have JD Banks, who recently became the editor in chief of our website. She’s responsible for quality control when it comes to the articles, reviews and columns that you see on our page. Of course she doesn’t write all the articles, but she reviews them before they get to the viewing public. She’s also the creator of our very own Anime 3000 Manga. We will put a link to that in our show notes.
Our other panelist is a senior writer and responsible for the majority of gaming information on our site. Of course I’m talking about Joshua Valencia, or the artist formerly known as Sugafree.
Impression from Anime Expo
AX has donated over 29,000 from the SPJA charity auction to benefit the children of Children’s Hospital Orange County. They also generated just under $30,000 to benefit the adolescent patients of Children’s Hospital Orange County (CHOC).
AX continues to hold the title of largest anime and manga event with over 44,000 unique attendees in the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 2 through 5.
Next year’s convention will be held July 1 through 4 at the Los Angeles Convention Center.
Pros:
Indecent Otaku Comedy Hour – Benu, Dancing Queen and Anime Diet put on a great panel filled with prizes, humor and great commentary. They had a packed house and an impressive opening video.
Gurren Lagann and Evangelion 1.0 Movie – Both the Gurren Lagann and Evangelion movie were great. I didn’t get to see the entire Gureen Lagann film, but the fan reaction amplified the movie’s impact. It was also my first time seeing it in Japanaese. Kamina’s voice is more powerful in the original dub. Evangelion 1.0 is perfect for someone seeing the series for the first time. Can’t wait for 2.0.
Crunchyroll’s and FUNimation’s Presence – With the panel on digital distribution and FUNimation’s announcement of their own online anime community, Shodojo, it felt that FUNimation and Crunchyroll bought the entire convention. They also had the two main booths at the entrance of the exhibit hall.
Cons:
Michael Jackson’s Death – One big con to AX was the shroud of gloom surrounding Michael Jackson’s death. Media remained parked across the street as a constant reminder of his death. It was great to see the all the cosplayers going back and forth as camera people established their shots.
No Press Area – I ran into Deb Aoki from about.com as she was trying to find a press area. I honestly forgot about looking for it from the day before, but came to find out that one didn’t exist after spending a few minutes walking around in vain. While I’m glad I did make it in as press and I got a free ticket to cover the event, I wish we would have had something.
